Food insecurity and hunger are caused by many factors, often being intertwined with one another. However, one of the main reasons is poverty. Poverty and hunger go hand in hand. Global hunger (sometimes also referred to as undernourishment) can be defined as a state where people are not able to get enough food to satisfy their basic nutritional needs on a global scale. Hunger is a quite big problem, especially in poor developing countries that suffer from extreme poverty.

Do you truly know what it means to be hungry? Hungry means different things to different people but starvation is the same feeling to everyone. Starvation is the worst possible torture someone could go through, especially for children, elders, and those that are ill. Starvation means that the individual is not getting the nutrition he/she needs in order to survive. How could they when they cannot afford it? How devastating would it be to watch your child or loved ones cry for food? Food that you have very little of. And knowing, eventually, there will be nothing left to eat. For many poor families in underdeveloped countries, this nightmare is a reality for thousands of families, and a global pandemic has only made this situation worse. You can join hands with Houston Unity Lions Club to help vulnerable families in Houston and around the world with a donation today or through one of our services events.

Locally, since the start of the pandemic, Houston Unity Lions Club has assisted seniors, single moms, families with children, and underprivileged families by providing over hundred boxes of produces and over 350 gallons of milk. On a global scale, Houston Unity Lions Club has been collaborating with other organizations to provided foods to needy families in Vietnam, India, and soon Mexico. In January 2020, the members of Houston Unity Lions Club had packaged over 3,000 nutritious meals with the Rise Against Hunger organization which those meals were shipped to El Salvador to help nourished lives through food assistant programs. In May 2020, Houston Unity Lions Club collaborated with Thien Tam Charity to distributed over 1,700 care packages to families in Kushinagar and Vaisali in India. Each care package consisted of around 20 pounds of rice, oil, salt, sugar, and some snacks for each family while they were under quarantine due to the pandemic. Back in December of 2019, the team assisted the Houston Royal Oaks Lions Club and Bee Busy Wellness to provided close to 1,000 turkeys, loaves of bread, potatoes, and hams to needy families for Thanksgiving in Houston, Texas.
